The 3 Cs of messaging: why clear, consistent and compelling should be your new content mantra

There’s a lot of noise out there.

And in a market where every law firm and chambers is jostling for attention, cutting through that noise has never been more critical (or more challenging).

Strong messaging isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s the backbone of every successful piece of communication, from your website and pitch documents to your LinkedIn posts and internal comms. If you want your message to land, it needs to tick three boxes: clear, consistent, and compelling.

Clear. Because if they don’t get it, they won’t care.

Clarity is the first (and arguably the most important) building block of good messaging. Yet, it’s the one that most often gets lost in legal and professional services content.

Too many firms still believe that complexity equals credibility. That long sentences, convoluted phrasing, and a heavy dose of jargon somehow make them sound smarter or more authoritative. But if your reader can’t grasp what you’re saying quickly, or worse, doesn’t bother to try, you’ve lost them before you’ve even started.

Writing clearly isn’t about dumbing down. It’s about making sure your message actually lands. That means:

    • Writing with your audience in mind, not yourself
    • Using plain language and cutting out the jargon
    • Keeping sentences short, sharp and purposeful
    • Using an active voice and straightforward structure

Good messaging passes the ‘so what?’ test. If it doesn’t make a relevant point, answer a real question or address a genuine need, it’s filler, and filler doesn’t get you far in a crowded market.

Consistent. Because trust builds when everything joins up.

Consistency isn’t about repeating the same soundbites on loop. It’s about making sure that wherever and whenever people hear from you – on your website, in a tender, on LinkedIn or face to face – they’re getting a joined-up experience.

Your message needs to sound like you. Every time.

    • The same tone of voice across all your content and channels
    • The same key themes and differentiators woven through your messaging
    • The same visual and structural approach, so everything feels part of the same story

And it’s not just about external audiences. Consistency starts with your leadership and internal teams. If your senior people aren’t on board with your messaging, and modelling it in their own communications, you’ll struggle to get anyone else to follow suit.

Having a clear messaging framework – a tone of voice guide and agreed key messages – isn’t a branding box-tick. It’s how you make sure your content actually works, supports your goals, and strengthens your reputation over time.

Compelling. Because attention is earned, not given.

Clarity and consistency might get you in the game. But if you want people to really listen  and act, your message also needs to be compelling.

Compelling messaging doesn’t mean gimmicky straplines or overblown claims. It means tapping into what your audience actually cares about, showing them why it matters, and making it easy for them to engage.

It’s about relevance, resonance and a little bit of boldness.

    Ask yourself:

    • Does this message speak directly to my audience’s needs or priorities?
    • Does it explain how I can solve a problem, make life easier or deliver better outcomes?
    • Does it highlight what makes us different, and why that matters?

Compelling content has a point of view. It earns attention by being confident, relevant and useful. And it’s always focused on what matters most to the client, referrer or reader,  not just what you want to say.

You don’t have to choose. It’s simple. You need all three.

The truth is, these three Cs aren’t a pick-and-mix. These messaging best practices work together, and you need all three to get results.

    • Clear messaging without consistency feels scattergun.
    • Consistent messaging without clarity is forgettable.
    • And clear, consistent messaging that isn’t compelling? That’s just wallpaper.

When you get all three working together, that’s when you build trust, drive engagement and start standing out in a crowded market.
